Main Idea:
Last week I hosted a YPO event and (very briefly!) shared the stage with
Arthur Brooks (

He made a brutal point: humans often “solve” a problem by creating a bigger one. We killed boredom with smartphones. Congrats. Now we’ve got anxiety, addiction, and teens in crisis.
We’re about to replay this with AI. The promise is less drudgery and more high‑value work. Love it. But regulation is veering into headline theater. California just passed the first broad AI law. Today it’s one state. Tomorrow it’s fifty different rulebooks.
That’s not safety—that’s chaos. And it won’t make us more competitive than countries moving in lockstep.
At minimum, we need
clear, federal, bipartisan guardrails—not a whack‑a‑mole of state mandates.
Here’s the play:
-Plan for compliance sprawl. Map where you operate, what data you touch, and which state rules could hit first. Appoint an owner.
-Lobby up the chain. When you meet influencers and policymakers, push for
federal, harmonized standards that protect safety
and competitiveness.

California fires the first AI shot. I favor smart guardrails—but a 50‑state patchwork will be a mess and a competitive drag. Do you think China is doing it this way? Not a chance.

From the Field: 🎤 Full‑Circle at DU
I got to introduce
Arthur Brooks at a
YPO event hosted at the University of Denver—where I was a student 20 years ago and now serve as chair of the
business school’s Executive Advisory Board. Humbling. The lesson:
invest back into the places that built you—it compounds, in community and in business.
